Boys Don't Dance: Edinburgh International Children's Festival's new commission

“All I wanted to do was dance but I was told “boys don’t dance” - Marc Brew

We are delighted that Marc Brew Company has been announced as Edinburgh International Children’s Festival’s new Festival commission.

Boy’s Don’t Dance will be by our very own Marc Brew, as part of an increased focus on disabled-led work. Boys Don’t Dance is a poignant dance theatre show reflecting on Marc’s journey as a boy who defied societal expectations to embrace his love for dance.

Of the piece Marc says.. “It’s really important for me to make this work because when I grew up in rural Australia in a small village, I didn’t have role models. I had this passion and desire to want to dance, to want to move with my body, but I was told being a boy, I couldn’t do that, and that’s just crushing…

I want this work to empower our younger generation to fulfill their goals and to make their own pathway.”

We’re really excited to be working with a talented team to create this new work for young audiences with R&D coming up in November. Watch this space to see the show’s development unfold or follow the link in our bio to find out more.

This new piece is commissioned by Imaginate in partnership with Aberdeen Performing Arts and supported by the Scottish Government’s Festivals Expo Fund.
