Boys Don’t Dance Research and Development took place in November 2025, with the creative team coming together to develop the commission. This took place at The Work Room, Glasgow.
This film lets us hear from the talented creative team during R&D, on the inspiration and process of Boys Don’t Dance.
Boys Don’t Dance previewed in May before its premiere at Edinburgh International Children’s Festival in June. It then travelled to Light the Blue Festival in Aberdeen.
Marc Brew – Concept, Direction and Choreography in collaboration with performers
Acclaimed International disabled choreographer Marc Brew trained as a professional dancer at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and The Australian Ballet School.
He has been working Internationally for over 24 years as a director, choreographer, dancer, teacher and speaker.
Marc was Associate Director with Scottish Dance Theatre, Associate Artist in 2015 at Tramway in Scotland, Artistic Director of AXIS Dance Company 2017-2021, is Associate Artist with Ballet Cymru in Wales and has been Artistic Director of his own Marc Brew Company since 2008.
Ross Malloy – Performer (young boy)
Ross is a dancer and actor from Glasgow. He studied Physical Theatre at East 15 Acting School, specialising in gymnastics, aerial, and puppetry.
Since graduating, he has toured a theatre production around Austria and co-created ‘Hitherto Theatre’ – a dance company who make weird and whimsical work
Piotr Iwanicki – Performer (older boy)
Piotr is one of the most accomplished wheelchair dancers, with multiple wheelchair World Latin Champion titles, including winning 6 World Championships, 5 European Championships, 11 Polish Championships, and a few World Cup crowns, all between 1999-2011.
He has performed as a guest artist at some of the most prestigious ballroom dance competitions including German Open, Blackpool (UK), Snowball Classic (Canada), Millenium Dancesport Championships (Florida), and has performed alongside some of the most acclaimed dancers including Michał Malitowski & Joanna Leunis, Ricardo Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko, Hanna Kartunnen & Victor da Silva, and has also appeared in the Romanian Dancing With the Stars.
Piotr has contributed to the popularization of wheelchair dance sport performing and teaching in many countries and inspiring other wheelchair users to dance and pursue their dreams.
In 2012, Piotr stopped competing after a serious surgery and spending 6 months in hospital. He came back stronger and won more competitions. He retired in 2024 continuing his career, teaching people online and offline and sharing his passion.
