MAYBE

MayBe is an international co-creation between Brazil and the UK. A show that explores Encounter as a catalyst of possibilities including love and intimacy.

In June 2015, Scottish based dancer and choreographer Marc Brew and Brazilian dancer Gisele Calazans participated in a creative residency at MIS – Museum of Image and Sound, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The encounter was a spontaneous combustion of bodies: movement and risk: affection and trust.

The creative process was conceived by Natalia Mallo (also live musician), and included Lighting Designer, Mirella Brandi as a co-creator of the work. The lighting emerged as a third dancer, making real-time choices, outlining the bodies and reshaping the space. Accessibility resources were embedded in the scene including caption, audio description and sign language.

“MayBe is about encounters and the inevitability of love. It is about what might be and an instance of doubt. Attraction, rejection, crossing paths and departures is a metaphor about the liquidity of relationships in the contemporary world.” (Natalia Mallo)

“Working with Natalia, Gisele and Mirella has been a wonderful cultural exchange between Scotland and Brazil where we have learnt an shared from each other through the creative process of MayBe. I particularly have fallen in love with their passion and commitment to dance and live music that encompasses whole heartedly a full accessible theatrical experience for all. And overcoming any obstacle that presents itself and how we can use it to inform the work and make it into a strength. MayBe combines a piece of us all and which is rich and honest.”(Marc Brew)

'Brew’s movement vocabulary has always had a compelling quality, both in his wheelchair and out of it, and MayBe is no exception. He and Calazans make for an intense couple, by turns tender and distant.'

'Fragile, delicate things must be handled with great care. So it is with choreographer/dancer Marc Brew's “MayBe,” conceived and directed by Natália Mallo in collaboration with him. It is a thing of profound beauty.'

'Brew’s floor work in particular is breath-taking in its fluidity. More than anything MayBe contains an athleticism at turns dangerous and irresistible. In different sequences the two dancers support each other’s weight seemingly effortlessly. At one point Calazans swims on Brew’s back and at another she lifts him as if he were a feather. In one of the most spectacular sequences they form a cross as Calazans extends herself in a horizontal position, across the back of Brew’s wheelchair.'

'An hour spent in the company of Australian choreographer and dancer Marc Brew and his Brazilian collaborator Natalia Mallo is one of sheer joy: they are warm, engaging, witty and articulate. I caught up with them during a break from rehearsals ahead of their performances of May Be at Tramway’s Unlimited Festival to talk about the dance process, disability in dance, and how their show turns on Brazilians.'

'Two bodies making contact, rolling over and through each other, melting together and then departing, separating at speed. Two bodies attracting, resisting, rejecting, and connecting. MayBe, created by Marc Brew Company in collaboration with Natalia Mallo, Gisele Calazans, and Mirella Brandi, is about love, about a sort of love not often found on stages.'
